updateRDF fails?

Thunderbird 3.0b4 (20090922030113; Linux x86_64)

i can't seem to use the data storage editor at all. there are four tabs near the top that are very small, so i have no idea what they mean. when i try to create a filter, i get this from the debug output:

shouldn't it be updating a local database, or am i reading that output wrong?

Hi Matt,
there had been a problem with non-existant virtualIdentity.rdf - and the same problem destroyed the storage option. This is fixed in [569ab53009], included in 0.6.0pre8

if i remove the virtualFolders.dat, and virtualIdentity.rdf files, i get this at the end of the intro screen:
checking for previous version of rdf, found null rdf-upgrade required. upgrade: tagDefaultSMTP
the next button is greyed out, so i can only close the window down.
